Lancaster and Palmdale run into one another, so this is the town we reach quickest after our own. That matters most on the small jobs, the ones that are hard to justify sending anyone a long way for. A dripping faucet is worth fixing whether or not it is worth a forty minute drive.

What the houses here ask for

Lancaster is not one kind of housing. The older neighbourhoods have been standing long enough to be on their second or third round of maintenance: original fixtures reaching the end of their lives, paint that has taken decades of direct sun, and doors that have moved with the ground under them. The newer tract streets are uniform enough that a fault on one house is usually a fault on the next one along, which is worth knowing if a neighbour has just had the same thing done.

What both share is the climate. Evaporative coolers are ordinary equipment here rather than unusual, and they want attention at both ends of the season. Hard water works steadily through fixtures and water heaters. The sun finishes the job on the south and west elevations, which lose their paint years before the shaded sides do.
